Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition

The Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition takes place every year, and is open to students of all disciplines who are full-time students in the Mead Witter School of Music.  Students compete in preliminary rounds in each departmental area (strings, woodwinds, brass, piano, percussion, voice). The final round takes place in the Mead Witter Foundation Concert Hall. Each year, up to three winners are selected to perform their concerto, either in the following Spring or next Fall, with the UW-Madison Symphony Orchestra.

Wind Ensemble Concerto Competition

The biennial Wind Ensemble Concerto Competition is open to students of all musical instruments who are full-time students in the Mead Witter School of Music at UW – Madison and participating in a large performing ensemble. The competition auditions occur during the fall semester of odd-numbered years.  Winners perform the following semester (spring semester of even-numbered years). Performers compete in a single round competition recital adjudicated by faculty/professional musicians. Solo entries should be original works for wind ensemble. One winner is selected to perform a concerto with the Wind Ensemble.

Irving Shain Piano and Woodwind Duo Competition Competition

Started in 2007 by former Chancellor, biochemist and flutist, Irving Shain (1926-2018), the Irving Shain Woodwind and Piano Duo Competition was created to encourage pianists and wind players to collaborate. Chancellor Shain had already created the Beethoven Competition in the Keyboard Area in the early ‘80’s and felt that it was successful in championing the works he wanted to hear while supporting students through monetary awards. Since 2007, the fund has awarded and recognized over 50 students and is now endowed.
