Alumni Accomplishments
The School of Music is proud of its more than 3,000 alumni, who hold positions at major universities and orchestras, as accomplished studio and public school music teachers, as busy free-lance musicians, and in a variety of other occupations.

Featured Alumni Accomplishments

Daniel Black
Composer/conductor Daniel Black was awarded a Diploma in the composition for solo instrument and orchestra division of the Fifth International Prokofiev Competition in Composition, held in St. Petersburg, Russia from April 10-11. As part of the Diploma award, Black’s composition, Concertino for Horn and Orchestra, was premiered on April 11 in the Glazunov Hall of the St. Petersburg Conservatory.


Scott Brickman
Scott Brickman (B.M. 1987), Professor of Music and Education at the University of Maine at Fort Kent, had his Symphony #1 (2006), recorded by the Kiev Philharmonic, released on the CD Masterworks of the New Era vol.12 (ERM-6827).


Christian Elser
Christian Elser ('94, BM - Vocal Performance), recently completed his Doctor of Musical Arts in Voice at the University of Kansas, and has joined the faculty of Presbyterian College in Clinton, South Carolina as an Assistant Professor of Music. He will act as the Voice Area Coordinator, as well as teach Voice, Opera Workshop and Music History.

As an operatic baritone, Christian has performed roles with such organizations as the Chicago Opera Theater, Lyric Opera Kansas City, Lyric Opera Cleveland, Light Opera Oklahoma, Jefferson Performing Arts Society (New Orleans), the Southwest Symphony, Waukesha Symphony, and Chicago City Symphony to name a few. He can also be heard singing several roles on the world premiere recording of Robert Kurka's opera "The Good Soldier Schweik" released by Cedille Records in 2002.

He is a graduate of the UW School of Music ('94 BM, Vocal Performance), Northwestern University ('96 MM, Historical Musicology), and the University of Kansas ('08 DMA, Voice).


Nate Stampley
Nate Stampley played the role of Mufasa in West End London in a long-run production of "The Lion King", and recently participated in a photo shoot with New York "King" (a.k.a. mayor Michael Bloomberg) and the king from "Spamalot." He is currently is in the cast of the Broadway production "The Lion King," and was recently in the premier cast of "The Color Purple" on Broadway. He has been heard across the United States in national touring productions of "Ragtime" and "The Lion King". He performed in "Pacific Overtures" on the Navy Pier in Chicago, and was a nominee for the Jeff Award.


Patrick Burke
Assistant Professor of Music at Washington University in St. Louis
Patrick Burke received his Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology in 2003 from the University of Wisconsin, and he is currently Assistant Professor of Music at Washington University in St. Louis.


Kathryn Dey
Principal Viola in the Greenville Symphony Orchestra, GSO string quartet member, string instructor at South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities
Kathryn Dey, who received a BM in Viola Performance from the UW-Madison in 1994 and who has studied at Eastman, is principal viola of the Greenville (SC) Symphony Orchestra and violist of the GSO string quartet. Ms. Dey is also on the string faculty of the South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities, a residential arts high school located in Greenville, South Carolina. She is the viola instructor and chamber music coach at the Governor's School and also created Concertato String Orchestra, a conductorless chamber orchestra that received top prize at the 2006 ASTA High School Orchestra Competition in Kansas City.


David Chidsey
Instructor of Applied Guitar at Teachers College and adjunct instructor of Jazz Studies in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences
David Chidsey is in his second year at Columbia University in New York, and along with his other teaching positions he currently instructs string orchestra at the High School for Environmental Studies in Manhattan. He has also started a music teaching business called the Manhattan Music Instruction, where he currently employs two other faculty members and is growing.
