Associate Principal Oboe Youn Joo Lee joined the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra in July 2012. Previously, she was principal oboe of the Lafayette Symphony Orchestra and Allentown Symphony Orchestra. Ms. Lee has worked with distinguished conductors such as Pierre Boulez, Myung-Whun Chung, Charles Dutoit, Christoph Eschenbach, Valey Gergiev, James Levine, Kurt Masur, Ricardo Mutti, Michael Tilson Thomas and performed with soloists Martha Argerich, Misha Maisky, Joshua Bell, Hilary Hahn, Thomas Quasthoff, as a principal oboist in Asia, Europe and United States.

Her festival appearances include the U.B.S. Verbier Music Festival in Switzerland, the Salzburg Music Festival in Austria, the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival in Germany and the Pacific Music Festival in Japan where she was invited the consecutive year as well. In addition, she was invited to play with the New World Symphony Orchestra, Owensboro Symphony Orchestra and Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra.

As a soloist, Ms. Lee made her orchestral debut with the Seoul Philharmonic at age sixteen and won the first prize at the Music Journal Competition, the Chunchu Music Competition. As a winner of the Indianapolis Matinee Musicale Competition in woodwind section, she gave the winner’s concert in Indianapolis. She also appeared as a soloist of the Haydn’s Symphonia Concertanteperforming with the Indiana University Orchestra.

Ms. Lee also appeared regularly as a recitalist in New York, Boston, Indianapolis and Bloomington. Her chamber music appearance includes a gala concert hosted by the Lyric Chamber Music Society of New York performing with Joseph Robinson, Keisuke Wakaoand Cally Banham. In addition, Ms. Lee joined Pierre Boulez’s chamber works concert that conducted by Pierre Boulez and invited to perform a chamber recital with Ingo Goritzki sponsored by Seoul International Chamber Music Festival. Recently, she performed the Mozart oboe quartet with members of Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra and she gave a solo recital at Seoul Arts Center.

Ms. Lee received her Bachelor’s degree from the Seoul National University with highest honors in music. She earned Master’s degree from the Manhattan School of Music studying with Joseph Robinson and pursued the Professional Study in orchestral performance with Robert Botti receiving full scholarship. She is awarded a Doctorate in Music and also holds Performers Diploma from the Jacobs School of Music, Indiana University where she studied with Linda Strommen and Roger Roe. In addition to serving as associate principal oboist of Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, she currently teaches as adjunct professor at Korea National University of Arts, visiting professor at Suwon University, Seoul Arts High School, and Yewon School.

Ms. Lee showcases music and composers from nations with rich musical histories. She continues to engage with the public in various ways through solo recitals at the Seoul Arts Center, beginning with “British Breeze,” followed by “Autumn in Paris,” “Three Italian Oboe Concertos,” and “La Melodie de la Vie.” Recently she appeared at the International Double Reed Society Conference in Arizona to give a premier of the Goblins for oboe and piano by Donald Reid Womack.
