Maritza Figueroa-Garibay and Austin Richey together comprise the Detroit-based electronic music duo, Dominant Hand. Dominant Hand is an ambient sound group that uses both homemade and modular synthesizers, CMYK and video media, and built environments to “sound the room”: create electronic soundscapes that reflect local cultures, politics, and social networks in Detroit, MI.

Their synthesizers, designed and modified to sound like large tom drums and bass drones, are quasi-generative and create organismic rhythms from their primitive sequencers. Drawing on the compositional traditions of Pauline Oliveros, Meredith Monk, and Terry Riley, Dominant Hand invites people to cultivate a deep listening environment, to retune the sonic senses, and to connect with their local milieu and history
