Founded in 1965, the Wingra Wind Quintet at the Mead Witter School of Music is one of the longest running quintets in the nation. Known for artistic and pedagogical excellence, the ensemble has been featured in performance at national conferences such as The Fundación Universitaria Bellas Artes in Medellín, Colombia,
MENC (Miami), MTNA (Kansas City), and the International Double Reed Society (Minneapolis). The quintet also presented an invitational concert on the Dame Myra Hess series at the Chicago Public Library, broadcast live on WFMT. In addition to its extensive home state touring, the quintet has been invited to perform at numerous college campuses, including the universities of Alaska-Fairbanks, Chicago, Illinois, Nebraska, as well as Northwestern Western Michigan, Florida State, Cornell, the Interlochen Arts Academy, and the Paris Conservatoire, where quintet members offered master classes.
The Wingra Wind Quintet has recorded for Golden Crest, Spectrum, and the Mead Witter School of Music recording series and is featured on an educational video entitled Developing Woodwind Ensembles. Always on the lookout for new music of merit, Wingra has premiered new works of George Lewis, Hilmar Luckhardt, Vern Reynolds, Alec Wilder, Edith Boroff, James Christensen, and David Ott. The group gave the Midwest regional premiere of William Bolcom’s Five Fold Five, a sextet for woodwind quintet and piano, with pianist Christopher Taylor. New York Times critic Peter Davis, in reviewing the ensemble’s Carnegie Hall appearance, stated “The performances were consistently sophisticated, sensitive, and thoroughly vital.”
The Wingra Wind Quintet is one of three faculty chamber ensembles in-residence at the Mead Witter School of Music. Deeply committed to the spirit of the Wisconsin Idea, the group travels widely to offer its concerts and educational services to students and the public in all corners of the state.

Andrew Yee, cello
……
Program
……
Two time GRAMMY Award winning cellist and composer Andrew Yee (She/They) has been praised by Michael Kennedy of the London Telegraph as “spellbindingly virtuosic.” Trained at the Juilliard School, she is a founding member of the internationally acclaimed Attacca Quartet who have released several albums to critical acclaim including Andrew’s arrangement of Haydn’s “Seven Last Words” which Thewholenote.com praised as “ . . .easily the most satisfying string version of the work that I’ve heard.” Their recordings of the string quartets of Caroline Shaw; ‘Orange’ and ‘Evergreen’ have each won GRAMMY awards for best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble performance. The Attacca Quartet can also be heard on the score of the Alfonso Cuaron show ‘Disclaimer’ scored by Finneas O’Connell and on Billie Eilish’s album ‘Hit Me Hard and Soft’.
She co-composed a score to Wu Tsang’s film adaptation of Moby Dick; or, The Whale with Caroline that was premiered with the Zurich Chamber Orchestra, and then in New York at the Shed by the New York Philharmonic. She is writing works for Leilehua Lanzilotti, the Thalea Quartet and the Minnesota Philharmonic Orchestra this season, as well as a new version of the opera ‘Carmen’ for Schauspielhaus Zürich directed by Wu Tsang. She is also scoring an upcoming BBC show entitled ‘We Might Regret This” and has been commissioned by the LA Phil to write a piece for solo cello to be experienced solely through a haptic vest, to provide a shared musical experience for the hearing and Deaf/Hard of hearing communities.
As a soloist with orchestra Andrew has performed John Taverner’s The Protecting Veil, Strauss Don Quixote and the Strauss Four Last Songs in recent seasons. Her solo project “Halfie” draws on her experience as a bi-racial and trans person in having access to multiple communities at once, while not feeling at home in any of them. The works commissioned and on the concerts will feature a wide range of composers all for solo cello. She has been touring a duo show with Caroline Shaw since 2021.
She likes to draw apples, cook like an Italian Grandma and have developed coffee and cocktail programs for award-winning restaurants (Lilia, Risbobk, Atla) in New York City. Her son Otis is the love of her life. She plays on an 1884 Eugenio Degani cello on loan from the Five Partners Foundation.

In addition to his teaching responsibilities as Professor of Music, Bassoon, Marc Vallon is bassoonist for the Wingra Wind Quintet in residence at the School of Music. A native of France, Vallon studied at the Paris National Conservatory where he earned two Premier Prix, one for bassoon studies with Maurice Allard and the other for chamber music with Maurice Bourgue, Myron Bloom, and Christian Lardé. He started playing professionally at the age of 18 during his conservatory studies and joined the Paris-based Orchestre National de France and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio-France, performing under many renowned conductors including Sergiu Celibidache, Leonard Bernstein, Seiji Ozawa, Karl Boehm, and Lorin Maazel. Soon afterward Vallon’s interests led him to the numerous smaller Parisian groups specializing in contemporary music. He was a founding member of the Nielsen Quintet in 1975, with which he played hundreds of concerts devoted largely to 20th century repertoire. He also collaborated with the Ensemble Intercontemporain, conducted by Pierre Boulez, and took part in the first performance of Boulez’s major work, Répons. Concurrently, he earned a degree in philosophy at the Paris-Sorbonne (University of Paris).
Marc Vallon was one of the pioneers of the early music movement in the 1980s. He was principal bassoonist with the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra for more than 20 years and performed with other leading early music ensembles such as La Chapelle Royale, Les Arts Florissants, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, and Tafelmusik. His personal collection of early instruments includes originals and copies of instruments dating from 1670 to 1920.
Vallon has taught modern and baroque bassoon at the Paris Conservatory and the Lyon Conservatory and has given master classes worldwide. His name can be found on more than one hundred commercial recordings, among them his acclaimed rendering of the Mozart bassoon concerto with the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra.
An avid composer and arranger, Vallon uses these skills in his pedagogical approach. Besides his bassoon and chamber music teaching responsibilities, he teaches classes in “Solfège, Conservatoire style” and bassoon pedagogy.

This event is co-hosted by the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences and Mead Witter School of Music, and is presented as part of Earth Fest.
Earth Signals: El Niño is a science-inspired musical experience. This event is a transdisciplinary project led by Elizabeth Maroon, professor of atmospheric and oceanic sciences, whose NSF CAREER Award, “Signals from the Deep” supports cross-campus education and public outreach.
The UW Bridge Ensemble, an eight-person group blending jazz and classical music, will perform a new composition by Ben Ferris, DMA candidate in the School of Music, inspired by El Niño forecasts. El Niño data will also be converted directly from numbers into sound, a process known as sonification. Alongside the performances, attendees will learn about the science behind El Niño and gain perspective on how this climate pattern can affect weather worldwide.

Jazz guitarist Peter Bernstein has been a part of the jazz scene in New York and abroad since 1989. During that time he has participated in over 80 recordings and numerous festival, concert and club performances with musicians from all generations. As a leader, Peter has released nine albums and a DVD, Live at Smoke.
He got his first break while attending the New School when he met the legendary guitarist Jim Hall. Hall asked Peter to participate in his Invitational Concert as part of the 1990 JVC Jazz Festival. The event featured such guitarists as John Scofield and Pat Metheny and was release as Live at Town Hall Vol. 2. by Music Masters. Hall noted that Peter “…has paid attention to the past as well as the future. He is the most impressive guitarist I’ve heard. He plays the best of them all for swing, logic, feel and taste.”
Also in 1990, Peter Bernstein was discovered by alto saxophonist Lou Donaldson and took part in the first of four recordings with him. He was a regular member of his group throughout the 1990s. “Some people just have it.” Donaldson said. “…most of the time you have to teach someone what to do, but Peter knows it all.”
Peter has also enjoyed long musical associations with legendary drummer Jimmy Cobb (Cobb’s Mob), as well as organist Larry Goldings and drummer Bill Stewart as a member of their highly acclaimed trio. The New York Times called them “the best organ trio of the last decade”. Together they recorded a dozen of records, all of which display their distinctive sound, whether exploring the depths of jazz standards or playing their original compositions.
From 1995 through 1997, Peter was a member of Joshua Redman’s band and played on Redman’s Freedom in the Groove CD. He played with Diana Krall’s quartet from 1999 through 2001 and with Dr. Lonnie Smith, the legendary organist who made his debut on the George Benson Cookbook albums. He has also recorded five CDs with organist Melvin Rhyne, known for his association with Wes Montgomery. In addition, Peter has appeared in groups led by Nicholas Payton, Sonny Rollins, Lee Konitz, Tom Harrell, and Eric Alexander.
Current projects include his recent album, Monk, recorded for the newly reactivated Xanadu label. Together with Doug Weiss and Bill Stewart, he put their own spin on the rich legacy of Thelonious Monk. In September, Bernstein released a solo guitar record, Solo Guitar – Live at Smalls (Smalls Live), an intimate recording that makes you feel like you’re sitting in the front row at Small’s jazz club in New York City.

Eunsu Kim, pianist, was born in South Korea and began her first piano lessons at the age of four. At eleven, she explored composition, but music remained only a hobby during her early years. For a time, she stepped away from the piano, dreaming of becoming a historian. However, her deep love for music ultimately prevailed, and at sixteen, she returned to the piano by entering Busan Arts High School. She has performed as a guest artist and collaborated with numerous musicians, particularly bass trombonists, at various venues across the United States and South Korea. From 2019 to 2023, she studied with André Watts, whose mentorship significantly shaped her musical development. During this time, she earned her Master of Music and Performer Diploma on a full scholarship and stipend at Indiana University – Bloomington. While studying, she participated in masterclasses with Edward Auer, Emanuel Ax, Tanya Gabrielian, Christopher Harding, and Nelita True. She also taught undergraduate students through both group and private lessons as an Associate Instructor at Indiana University – Bloomington. Eunsu is currently in her first year of the Doctor of Musical Arts program at the University of Wisconsin–Madison as a Paul J. Collins Wisconsin Distinguished Graduate Fellow, studying under Christopher Taylor. At the same time, she is completing her Artist Diploma at Indiana University – Bloomington under the guidance of Evelyne Brancart, continuing to expand her artistry through these complementary experiences.
