Janet Lyu is in her second year of the doctor of musical arts program at the University of Wisconsin – Madison under the guidance of Professor David Perry.
In this recital, all of the works presented either begin with extensive cadenzas or have a moment of respite from accompaniment. Arvo Pärt’s “Fratres” for violin and piano is a wonderful example of tintinnabuli, a compositional style he invented in 1976. The opening consists of an incredible slowburn from pianississimo to fortississimo over the course of arpeggiations that unexpectedly crashes into the piano entrance.
Next is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s fifth violin concerto. The entrance of the solo violin begins unaccompanied, which was uncommon at the time for his instrumental compositions. It is also nicknamed “Turkish” for having improvisatory flourishes in the last movement.
After intermission, there will be two rhapsodic works for violin and piano. Lee Geonyong enjoys a portfolio career as a performer, educator, and administrator. Most notably, he was president of Korea National University of Arts, the nation’s premier conservatory in Seoul. Lee’s Rhapsody begins with a violin cadenza, which is similar to Maurice Ravel’s iconic rhapsody for violin and piano. Tzigane was written in a whirlwind after Ravel saw the Hungarian violinist, Jelly d’Aranyi, in concert in London and was captivated by her improvisatory prowess. Each composition showcases the violin’s ability to portray raw emotions and the acrobatics it takes to execute them.
