Present Wooden Cathedral

Wooden Cathedral, written by Matt Sargent, is a concert for solo bass, immersive recorded bass  environment, and real-time electronics. It draws its material from Machaut’s Messe de Nostre  Dame along with dimensions of the Notre Dame Cathedral, to create canons and polyphony turning the bass into its own acoustic cathedral.

Matt Sargent (b. 1984) is a composer, guitarist, and recording engineer based in New York, where he is an assistant professor of music at Bard College. A versatile artist with an international reputation for his prolific musical life on the concert stage and in the recording studio, Sargent’s music has been described as “remarkable from all angles.” His work grows from interests in resonance and recursive systems, computer models of intelligence, and the making/breaking of long-form patterns.

Emmett Jackson is a Chicago-based Double Bassist, specializing in orchestral and contemporary  music. His international and regional orchestral appearances include Ensemble Modern, The Grossman Ensemble, Madison Symphony Orchestra, and the Grant Park Festival Orchestra. Emmett is the Assistant Principal Double Bass of the Fox Valley Symphony orchestra and was a member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago from 2019 to 2021.

He completed his undergraduate studies at Lawrence University, with Mark Urness, and his graduate studies at Northwestern University, with Andrew Raciti.
