Currently pursuing his Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, Alex Ferkey has worked as an educator and freelance double bassist throughout the United States and United Kingdom. While working in London, Ferkey served as the double bass teacher for Guildhall’s Centre for Young Musicians and maintained an active orchestral and chamber music career. An avid recitalist, Ferkey has given solo concerts across the US, UK, Bulgaria, and has recently completed a tour of Northeast Brazil presenting masterclasses and performances. As a passionate supporter of New and underperformed music, he frequently collaborates with young composers and has just completed a recording of chamber works by composer Bernard Van Dieren with the UK-based Gemini Ensemble.
The first bassist to be awarded the university’s prestigious Paul Collins Fellowship, Ferkey’s research at the University of Wisconsin focuses on reworking string pedagogy through a phenomenological lens, introducing a movement based teaching practice that aims to remove reliance on cultural metaphors and unclear language in teaching.
Ferkey holds degrees from the University of Wisconsin, University of Iowa, and Trinity Laban Conservatoire, studying with David Story, Volkan Orhon, Leon Bosch, and Peter Dominguez.
