Dear North Central Division member:
I am truly excited to welcome each of you to the 2022 North Central Division CBDNA Conference in the vibrant capital city of Madison, Wisconsin. Now, perhaps more than any other time in our organization’s history, we gather with renewed appreciation for the opportunities we have for fellowship, professional growth, and to share the experience of live music performances once again.
In addition to captivating performances by nine featured ensembles, our conference includes an array of research presentations, including those with topics specific to the interests of our NBA and athletic band colleagues. For those newer to the profession, in-depth sessions surrounding the job application/interview process will be offered by a panel of experts. We are also happy to welcome Dr. Rebecca Phillips, Director of Bands at Colorado State University, as conductor of the 2022 Intercollegiate Band.
Three keynote speakers, all of whom are luminaries in their respective fields, will present sessions designed to challenge and inspire us: Maestro Edo de Waart, Music Director Laureate of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra; Professor Marianne Ploger, pedagogue, music researcher, pianist, composer, clinician, and writer, whose main interest lies in musical communication; and Dr. Richard Davidson, Founder and Director of The Center of Healthy Minds at UW-Madison. I encourage you to read more about each of our guests below.
Finally, we are indebted to our host, Scott Teeple, as well as the faculty, staff, and students at the Mead Witter School of Music at the University of Wisconsin-Madison for their endless efforts in preparing for what I hope will be a unique and memorable experience for all attendees.

Dear Members of the North Central Region of CBDNA and NBA,
On behalf of the Band Department and my colleagues at the Mead Witter School of Music at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, I am pleased to welcome you to the 2022 regional CBDNA conference. After a long pause during the pandemic, it will be thrilling to hear live music performed by the selected ensembles in the new Mead Witter Concert Hall of the Hamel Music Center. Presentations by our colleagues and special guests Marianne Ploger, Richard Davidson, and Edo de Waart will help us continue to focus our musical and educational lens in the pursuit of our artistic goals.
In addition to the performances and sessions, Madison offers other cultural centers of artistic inspiration–all within walking distance of the conference sites. The Chazen Museum of Art and the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, stores with antique and new books, the Wisconsin State Capitol, the Memorial Union Terrace, and a diverse cuisine offering are all within walking distance of the conference center and hotels. The Pyle Conference Center, hotels, and Hamel Music Center are all within short walking distance.
Combined with the exemplary offerings of our conference, we are looking forward to sharing some of the exciting offerings of Madison, Wisconsin.
Together, we look forward to seeing you in Madison on April 7-9, 2022, for an exciting reunion of our North Central Region after such an extended pause. You might appreciate knowing that a mask mandate remains in effect for the UW–Madison campus and Dane County for your planning purposes. The mandate could change; we will keep you updated.
Planning our conference with Dr. Mary Schneider, has been a pleasure. Mary has considered the various needs of our members when making decisions about the offerings at our conference. Additionally, let me extend a tremendous amount of gratitude to Aaron Levine, our Ensemble Coordinator, for his work on putting together the details of our conference from the early planning stages to the final performance.

Richard Davidson
William James and Vilas Research Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry and Founder & Director of the Center for Healthy Minds, University of Wisconsin-Madison. Founder and Chief Visionary for Healthy Minds Innovations, Inc.
Davidson received his Ph.D. from Harvard University in Psychology in 1976. Davidson’s research is broadly focused on the neural bases of emotion and emotional style and methods to promote human flourishing including meditation and related contemplative practices. He has published over 440 articles, numerous chapters and reviews and edited 14 books. He is the author (with Sharon Begley) of "The Emotional Life of Your Brain" published in 2012 and co-author with Daniel Goleman of “Altered Traits” published in 2017. He was named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time Magazine in 2006. He was elected to the National Academy of Medicine in 2017 and appointed to the Governing Board of UNESCO’s Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (MGIEP) in 2018. In 2014, Davidson founded the non-profit, Healthy Minds Innovations, which translates science into tools to cultivate and measure well-being.
Edo de Waart
Music Director Laureate, Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. Chief Conductor, Royal Flemish Philharmonic.
Edo de Waart is music director laureate of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. His tenure as music director (2009-2017) of the MSO included sold-out concerts, critical acclaim, and a celebrated performance at Carnegie Hall. He is also music director of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and conductor laureate of the Antwerp Symphony and Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra.
At the age of 23, de Waart won the Dimitri Mitropoulos Conducting Competition in New York which resulted in his appointment as assistant conductor to Leonard Bernstein at the New York Philharmonic. On his return to Holland, he was appointed assistant conductor to Bernard Haitink at the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. In 1967, the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra appointed him guest conductor and, six years later, chief conductor and artistic director. Since then, he has also been music director of the San Francisco Symphony and Minnesota Orchestra, chief conductor and artistic director of the Sydney Symphony and Hong Kong Philharmonic, and chief conductor of De Nederlandse Opera.
Marianne Ploger
Author, Ploger Method: Perceptual Principles for Developing Musicianship (2014) and The Ploger Method: Crafting a Fluent Musical Mind (2018)
After earning her Master’s in Music, Piano Performance from the University of Michigan, Professor Ploger led her own private studio, where she primarily taught advanced aural skills to college students. Her observations as a performer and teacher helped form the foundation for her fluency-based approach to musical perception and cognition, and the results she achieved led to an invitation to join the faculty at the graduate school for the University of Michigan’s SMTD. In addition to her service as part of the world-renowned conducting faculty there, she was recognized in 2018 as recipient of the SMTD’s Alumni Association Hall of Fame Award for her contributions in music education.
As a passionate educator, lecturer, and clinician, Professor Ploger has led workshops and music language intensives across Europe and the United States, including appearances at the Hochschule für Kunst und Musik in Berlin, the Hochschule für Musik in Freiburg, the Bruchner Conservatory in Linz, the Royal Conservatory of Music in Copenhagen, the University of Göteborg in Sweden, Oberlin Conservatory, the University of Michigan, University of Minnesota, University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point, and Hamilton College.
