SUMMARY:Justin Weis - Guest Artist Series
DESCRIPTION:Purchase tickets\n$20 general admission\nStudents free (ticket required) \nMead Witter School of Music Guest Artist Series\nJustin Weis\, euphonium \n…… \nProgram  \n\n…… \nWith performances in three continents and 10 U.S. states\, Justin Weis is making a name for himself as a soloist and innovator for low brass. Originally from Milwaukee\, WI\, Justin continues to travel around the United States and abroad to share both beautiful and unconventional sounds of the euphonium and tuba. \nAmong other accolades\, Justin was the artist division winner at the 2024 Leonard Falcone Euphonium and Tuba Festival\, the electronics solo competition winner at the 50th International Tuba Euphonium Conference (ITEC)\, and the euphonium artist division winner at the 2022 International Women’s Brass Conference (IWBC). \nJustin has been selected as a guest recitalist at several regional conferences including the South Central\, South East\, and Great Plains. He has additionally been invited as a guest artist to teach and perform at schools including the Universities of Memphis and Wisconsin. During his time as a recitalist\, Justin has been involved in the commissioning of multiple works. Some commissions and consortium involvements include solo works with live electronics from Lucy Pankhurst and Andrew May\, a multimedia solo piece by Brandon Warner\, a concertino by Jazzy Pigott\, and consortium works by Fernando Deddos\, Maria Thompson Corley\, and Ian Lester. Though he performs a wide variety of repertoire spanning the 18th century to the present\, he takes a special interest in the use of innovative electronic technologies to advance the repertoire. \nIn addition to performing\, Justin actively composes works for solo euphonium and electronics\, and arranges for his euphonium quartet\, Euphonium Camerata. His works and arrangements have been performed at festivals\, galas\, conferences\, and competitions. His recent euphonium edition of the Cyrille Rose 32 Etudes for Clarinet is published by KDP\, and other arrangements can be found through the euphonium.com store. Additional compositions and arrangements are available upon request and include quartet arrangements of Bruckner\, Dvorak\, and Verdi\, which range in difficulty from music for young players to works that will challenge even professional ensembles. \nAs an educator\, Justin’s most recent positions were as Adjunct Instructor of Euphonium at the University of North Texas and Adjunct Professor of Low Brass at Collin College\, where he coached undergraduate students in weekly lessons. He served as a teaching fellow at the University of North Texas while completing his doctoral studies\, where he was additionally responsible for coaching a chamber ensemble and leading the 7 O’Clock Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble. He has previously taught as a private lesson instructor for multiple schools in the Dallas-Fort Worth area\, a graduate assistant at the University of Memphis\, and as a summer sectional coach for the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater summer band program. \nJustin received a BM in music education from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater\, an MM in euphonium performance with a conducting related field from the University of North Texas\, and a DMA in euphonium performance from UNT. He currently lives in Long Island\, New York\, where he is advocating for the euphonium as an instrument of expression outside the traditional classical settings. He continues to present recitals at conferences\, universities\, and nontraditional venues\, and is actively engaged in pushing the boundaries of the art form to draw in new listeners and challenge traditional norms.

SUMMARY:Concert Choir & Chorale with Jocelyn Hagen - Changemaker Series
DESCRIPTION:Purchase tickets\n$20 general admission\nStudents free (ticket required)\nAlso streaming live \nMead Witter School of Music Changemaker Series\nWith Jocelyn Hagen\, composer and vocalist \nPre-concert talk with Jocelyn Hagen begins at 7 pm \nDr. Mariana Farah and Dr. Bert Pinsonneault\, conductors\nJocelyn Hagen\, composer\nMonica Bertrand and Benjamin Hanson\, assistant conductors\nBoris Krivoshein and Hyeyeon Seok\, piano \n…… \nProgram\n \n…… \nJocelyn Hagen composes music that has been described as “simply magical” (Fanfare Magazine) and “dramatic and deeply moving” (Star Tribune\, Minneapolis/St. Paul). She is a pioneer in the field of composition\, pushing the expectations of musicians and audiences with large-scale multimedia works\, electro-acoustic music\, dance\, opera\, and publishing. Her first forays into composition were via songwriting\, still very evident in her work. The majority of her compositions are for the voice: solo\, chamber and choral. Her melodic music is rhythmically driven and texturally complex\, rich in color and deeply heartfelt. \nIn 2019 and 2020\, choirs and orchestras across the country are premiering her multimedia symphony The Notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci that includes video projections created by a team of visual artists\, highlighting da Vinci’s spectacular drawings\, inventions\, and texts. Hagen describes her process of composing for choir\, orchestra and film simultaneously in a Tedx Talk given at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis\, now available on YouTube. Her dance opera collaboration with choreographer Penelope Freeh\, Test Pilot\, received the 2017 American Prize in the musical theater/opera division as well as a Sage Award for “Outstanding Design.” The panel declared the work “a tour de force of originality.” \nAs a fierce advocate for gender equality and inclusivity\, Hagen’s Compose Like A Girl initiative amplifies female-identifying composers\, helps conductors diversify their concerts\, and works toward more equality in music programming and commissioning. Through her podcasts\, she engages in discussions with renowned composers like Reena Esmail\, Chen Yi\, and Rosephanye Powell. These conversations delve into the dynamics of opportunity\, power\, and privilege within the arts\, advocating for female-identifying composers to embrace their unique artistic expression with confidence. The initiative also provides mentorship to emerging women composers\, and highlights excellent work through her newly developed Compose Like A Girl Choral Series. \nIn 2013 Hagen released an EP entitled MASHUP\, in which she performs Debussy’s “Doctor Gradus ad Parnassum” while singing Ed Sheeran’s “The A Team.” She is also one half of the band Nation\, an a cappella duo with composer/performer Timothy C. Takach\, and together they perform and serve as clinicians for choirs from all over the world. \nHagen’s commissions include Conspirare\, the Minnesota Opera\, the Minnesota Orchestra\, the International Federation of Choral Music\, the American Choral Directors Association of Minnesota\, Georgia\, Connecticut and Texas\, the North Dakota Music Teachers Association\, Cantus\, the Boston Brass\, the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra and the St. Olaf Band\, among many others. Her work is independently published through JH Music\, as well as through Graphite Publishing\, G. Schirmer\, ECS Publishing\, Fred Bock Music Publishing\, Santa Barbara Music Publishing\, and Boosey and Hawkes.

Nick was also a fellow at the Round Top Festival Institute in 2013 where his performance of the Shostakovich Piano Quintet streamed on WQXR’s McGraw Hill Financial Young Artists Showcase. Nick performed with violist Nadia Sirota and the Grammy-award winning ensemble eighth blackbird while an undergraduate student. Nick proudly performed Rochberg’s String Quartet No. 3 with Aaron Boyd\, a violinist with Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center as part of his Performers Diploma program at Meadows School of the Arts. \nNick has also been fortunate enough to participate in masterclasses and take lessons with Roberto Diaz\, Nadia Sirota\, Paul Neubauer\, Donald McInnes\, Susan Dubois\, and Caroline Coade. Nick’s chamber music coaches include the Marmen Quartet\, Parry Karp\, Aaron Boyd\, James Dunham\, Gloria Chang\, Mike Block\, the Shanghai Quartet\, eighth blackbird\, Chee-Yun Kim\, Andres Diaz\, Emmanuel Borok\, John Owings\, Eteri Andjaparidze\, Brian Connelly\, Erin Hannigan\, and Matt Albert. \nOutside of Music\, Nick loves exploring coffee shops\, hiking\, cooking\, petting dogs and cats\, and reading. Nick plans to teach Viola and Chamber Music at an established university and continue passing down the legacies he inherited from his mentors. Nick’s primary teachers include Barbara Sudweeks\, former Assistant Principal Violist of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra\, and Sally Chisholm\, Violist of the Pro Arte Quartet.

SUMMARY:Live from the Mead Witter School of Music - Aspen String Trio
DESCRIPTION:Free | No ticket required\nAlso streaming live \nLive from the Mead Witter School of Music presents:\nAspen String Trio \nDavid Perry\, violin\nVictoria Chiang\, viola\nMichael Mermagen\, cello \n…… \nProgram  \n \n…… \nThe Aspen String Trio is one of the rare professional string trios performing and touring today. Celebrated for visionary programming and virtuoso performances offered with humor and insight\, AST performs the complete trios of Beethoven\, Mozart\, and Schubert\, as well as lesser known blockbuster works by Dohnanyi\, Hindemith\, Martinů\, Rozsa\, Klein\, Veress\, Villa-Lobos and Ysaÿe\, among others. Their many “themed” concert programs are in high demand\, including a Goldberg Variations lecture recital\,  Recovering “Degenerate” Music\, offering works of heartstopping beauty by composers tragically suppressed by the Nazi regime\, and a new program that imaginatively explores  John Harbison’s brilliant new trio\,  “a major addition to the tiny string trio repertory\,” paired with the work that inspired it\, Mozart’s K563 “Divertimento\,” an extraordinary masterpiece that hides under its title.  During his recent centennial year\, AST introduced MieczysławWeinberg’s ravishing String Trio\, only recently re-discovered. \nConsistently praised for their masterful sensitivity and nuance\, their ultra-refined musicianship\, tight ensemble work and musical intelligence\, AST formed as summer artist teaching colleagues at Aspen Music Festival and School more than twenty years ago.  Violinist David Perry\, formerly a member of the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra\, now leads the Pro Arte Quartet\, in residence at University of Wisconsin–Madison\, where he holds a Collins Endowed Professorship; he is also concertmaster of the Chicago Philharmonic. Violist Victoria Chiang is a member of the artist faculty of the Peabody Conservatory of Music\, was formerly on the faculty of The Juilliard School and the Hartt School of Music\, and previously served on the board of the American Viola Society.  Cellist Michael Mermagen is Associate Professor of Cello at UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance; formerly Associate Professor of Cello and Chamber Music at The Catholic University of America\, and he has served as Chamber Symphony Principal Cellist of the Aspen Music Festival and School for more than 25 years. \nReturning to live performance after the pandemic\, the Trio’s engagements this season include performances and outreach for the Omaha Chamber Music Society\, the Omaha Conservatory of Music\, University of Nebraska-Omaha\, the National Music Museum\, the Bach Festival Society\, Rollins College\, and the Rutenberg Series (USF\, Tampa). Recent engagements have included performances paired with educational engagement at the Chamber Music Society of Logan\, Lousiana State University in Baton Rouge\, and on series the Artists’ Series (Tallahassee)\, Beaux Arts Chamber Music Series (Naples)\, Ashville Chamber Music Series\, Chamber Music Kelowna (BC)\, Los Angeles Music Guild\, Barge Music (New York)\, and the National Gallery of Art (Washington\, DC).  The trio has held residencies in Texas\, Georgia\, the Carolinas\, Iowa\, Alabama\, Delaware\, Washington\, and Colorado. For six seasons AST was Ensemble-in-Residence at the University of Baltimore. \nThe trio offers extensive outreach as an integral part of all residencies. As teaching faculty at distinguished universities and conservatories\, trio members are all master teachers\, offering inspiring classes\, lessons and chamber music coachings for all ages\, children through adult\, and all experience levels.  While on the road they perform in community centers\, senior residences\, and in health care facilities. They also offer a variety of professional development workshops focusing on career-oriented topics such as: The business of music\, The successful chamber ensemble\, Teamwork and leadership\, Effective rehearsal strategies\, and Teaching as a profession. \nThe Aspen String Trio has recorded music of Mozart\, Beethoven and Strauss\, and is currently preparing the complete string trios and other music of Martinů for release on the Naxos label. \n…… \n“Live from the Mead Witter School of Music” is a chamber music series held the second Sunday of each month at the Hamel Music Center during the academic year. \nThe series is made available by the generosity of donors to the David and Kato Perlman Live from the Mead Witter School of Music Fund.
