DESCRIPTION:Purchase tickets\n$20 general admission\nStudents free (ticket required) \nMead Witter School of Music Faculty Artist Series \nWorks by Laura Schwendinger with \nConor Nelson\, flute\nSarah Brailey\, soprano\nOriol Sans\, conductor​\nChristopher Taylor\, piano\nSally Chisholm\, viola\nDawn Dongeun Wohn​\, violin\nStephen Dubetz\, ​clarinet\nMatthew Zalkind​\, cello \n…… \nLaura Schwendinger\, composer of Artemisia\, winner of the 2023 American Academy of Arts and Letters Charles Ives Opera award ($50\,000)\, one of the largest such award to composers of opera\, was the first composer to win the Berlin Prize in 1999 and a 2009 Guggenheim Fellow. \nA professor of music composition at UW–Madison\, her works have been championed by Dawn Upshaw\, Jennifer Koh\, Janine Jansen\, Matt Haimovitz\, the Arditti\, JACK and Spektral Quartets\, International Contemporary Ensemble\, Eighth-Blackbird\, Juilliard\, American Composers Orchestra\, Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra of Hungary. Her music has been performed at the Kennedy & Lincoln Centers\, Berlin Philharmonic\, Wigmore & Carnegie Halls\, Miller Theater\, and the Théâtre Châtelet\, Tanglewood\, Aspen\, Ojai\, Talis\, & Bennington Music Festivals. She has received further fellowships from the Radcliffe Institute at Harvard\, Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center\, First Prize of the 1995 ALEA III International Competition\, as well as multiple fellowships from the American Academy of Arts and Letters\, Copland House\, Fromm\, Koussevitzky and Bogliasco Foundations\, MacDowell and Yaddo. \nHer music has been called “captivating\, artful and moving”\, “music of infinite beauty” in the New York Times\, as well as “ the genuine article..onto the ’season’s best list “ in the Boston Globe. Recent premieres include her second opera\, Cabaret of Shadows\, (a Fromm Commission) produced by Musiqa at MATCH 2 in Houston\, Nightingales for Eleanor Bartsch and Ariana Kim\, a consortium commission from the Dubuque & UW Symphony Orchestras\, and a harp concerto\, Second Sight for Atlanta Symphony principal harpist Elisabeth Remy Johnson\, commissioned for the 100th anniversary of the Emory University Orchestra program. A solo cello work\, Fluorecenza\, was commissioned as part of Matt Haimovitz’s Primavera Project. A San Francisco Classical Voice review of her opera read “Artemisia is sumptuous on every level” and Colin Clarke wrote of her JACK CD QUARTETS\, “the sheer intensity of the music is spellbinding…the passion shines through like light.” Opera Magazine just called her third opera Margaret in Love and War “atmospheric” and “effecting.”

Recent engagements include Bonze in Madama Butterfly and Ferrando in Il trovatore (Opéra de Montréal)\, Dr. Bartolo in Le nozze di Figaro(Calgary Opera\, Austin Opera)\, Dr. P in The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat (Nashville Opera)\, Friar Laurent in Roméo et Juliette (Florentine Opera)\, and Dr. Grenvil in La traviata (Calgary Opera). \nOther highlights include Sparafucile in Rigoletto (Vancouver Opera\, English National Opera\, Hawaii Opera Theatre\, Opera Memphis)\, Raimondo in Lucia di Lammermoor and Leporello in Don Giovanni (Opera Colorado)\, Hobson in Peter Grimes (English National Opera)\, and The Client in Three Way (Brooklyn Academy of Music\, Nashville Opera). He has also appeared as a soloist in major concert works including Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 (Santa Fe Symphony) and Handel’s Messiah (St. Louis Symphony). \n…… \nPianist Deirdre Brenner believes in the power of storytelling through concert curation. Over the past two decades she has grown a multifaceted career which combines performance\, teaching and artistic leadership. \nDeirdre has performed chamber music and art song recitals throughout the USA\, Europe and Asia in venues including the Wiener Musikverein\, Wiener Konzerthaus\, Wiener Volksoper (Vienna)\, The Kennedy Center (Washington\, DC)\, Teatro Real (Madrid)\, Philharmonie Essen\, Kunsthalle Hamburg\, Stadthalle Bayreuth\, the National Concert Hall (Dublin)\, and the Hollywell Music Room (Oxford). She has appeared at festivals including the Seoul Spring Festival of Chamber Music\, Oxford Lieder Festival\, Aix-en-Provence Festival\, West Cork Chamber Music Festival\, Schubertíada Vilabertran\, Gustav Mahler Festival Steinbach\, Rhodes Chamber Music Festival and Portogruaro International Music Festival. \nDeirdre has partnered with artists including Wolfgang Holzmair\, Birgid Steinberger\, Tara Erraught\, Michael Spyres\, John Chest\, Layla Claire\, Elena Copons\, Dorrotya Láng\, Sophie Junker\, Christina Gansch\, Margaret Plummer and Klemens Sander\, and has performed as soloist with the New Hampshire Philharmonic\, Dartmouth Symphony Orchestra\, and the Arnold Schoenberg Chor\, among others. She has recorded for broadcasts on NPR\, ORF\, RTÉ and BR-Klassik. Further musical projects have taken her to Venezuela\, Egypt\, Jerusalem\, the West Bank\, Samoa and the Kingdom of Tonga. \nAlso in demand as a teacher and a coach\, Deirdre joined the University of Madison’s Mead Witter School of Music faculty in 2025. She taught previously for many years in Austria: at the Anton Bruckner University in Linz\, Joseph Haydn Conservatory in Eisenstadt\, IES Abroad\, and the Performing Center Austria in Vienna. She has given masterclasses internationally. \nIn 2013 Deirdre co-founded the Boyne Music Festival (BMF) in Drogheda\, Ireland\, an annual summer festival of chamber music\, poetry and song. Currently serving as co-director\, the BMF has been celebrated for its exciting programs in unique historic settings in the Boyne Valley. From 2013 until 2018 she also curated the concert series Mosaïque in Vienna which fused art song with other artistic forms in innovative thematic programs. \nBorn in Massachusetts\, USA\, Deirdre earned a Bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College with a double major in Engineering Sciences and Music\, and Master’s degrees from both the Royal Academy of Music in London and the Konservatorium Wien (MUK) in Vienna.
