SUMMARY:University Opera presents: Our Town
DESCRIPTION:Purchase tickets\nGeneral Public: $32\nSenior: $27\nStudent (UW–Madison and all other): $10 \nFriday\, March 20\, 7:30 pm\nSaturday\, March 21\, 7:30 pm\nSunday\, March 22\, 2 pm\nTuesday\, March 24\, 7:30 pm \nNed Rorem beautifully captures the atmosphere of Grover’s Corners\, New Hampshire at the turn of the 20th century in his operatic treatment of Thornton Wilder’s seminal play. His harmonic language juxtaposes an open feeling of Americana with dissonance\, an apt setting for this tale. The Stage Manager character narrates the familiar story following young George Gibbs and Emily Webb and their parents as they fall in love and get married. And the last act’s poignant denouement occurs in the same way as it does in the play\, as the dead remind us that life is short and we need to cherish it. \n

SUMMARY:CANCELED Eleni Katz - Faculty Artist Series
DESCRIPTION:3/18/26 update: This recital has been canceled.  \nMead Witter School of Music Faculty Artist Series \nEleni Katz\, bassoon\nChristopher Taylor\, piano\nGabrielle Herbst\, composer\nRichard Brasseale\, composer & saxophone\nMarc Vallon\, composer\nAlicia Lee\, clarinet\nJean Laurenz\, trumpet\nDawn Wohn\, violin\nMatthew Zalkind\, cello \n…… \nProgram \n\n…… \nHailed for her virtuosity and vibrant musical spirit\, bassoonist Eleni Katz has established herself as a prominent soloist\, chamber musician\, and orchestral player. Her “thoughtful and expressive” approach to music making has led her to performances by the bright blue waters of Bermuda to the lights of Carnegie Hall (San Diego Union Tribune).  Eleni is a winner of the 2022 Concert Artist Guild Victor Elmaleh Competition and has performed with the likes of Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center\, La Jolla Music Society’s SummerFest\, and the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. Currently\, Eleni is bassoon teaching faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Mead Witter School of Music. \nAs a classically trained singer from Iowa City\, Katz has always believed that the bassoon should emulate the organic nature of the human voice and her approach to playing the bassoon has been described as “uncannily human” (The Royal Gazette). In 2021\, she commissioned and premiered “Sea Glass Partita for Singing Bassoonist” with composer Lila Meretzky. Drawing its lyrics from a poem that Eleni composed\, the piece intersperses bassoon performance with singing and visual projections. Since the performance of this work\, Eleni has commissioned several other works for bassoon that are multidisciplinary experiences by Tanner Porter\, Harry Castle\, and Richard Brasseale. In May 2024\, Eleni Katz co-released an album featuring Richard Brasseale’s composition Enlaced Friendship\, a work based on her original poetry that premiered at the New World Symphony in April 2023. \nA few of Eleni’s 25-26 season highlights include performances with Camerata Pacifica\, Charlottesville Chamber Music Festival\, Artist Series Concerts of Sarasota\, and a return to Phoenix Chamber Music Society. Other recent appearances include Tallgrass Chamber Music Festival\, Highlands Cashiers Chamber Music Festival\, Newport Classical\, Ibagué Festival in Colombia\, a California tour with the Concert Truck\, Chamber Music Society of Fort Worth\, and the Lake George Music Festival. As an orchestral performer\, Eleni has appeared with several groups across the country\, including the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra\, The Orchestra San Antonio\, the Fort Worth Symphony\, the Sarasota Orchestra\, the Nu Deco Ensemble\, and as a member of the New World Symphony. \nEleni received her B.M. at the University of Wisconsin’s Mead Witter School of Music under Marc Vallon. She earned her M.M and M.M.A degrees at the Yale School of Music\, studying with Frank Morelli.

SUMMARY:University Symphony Orchestra - Student Ensemble Series
DESCRIPTION:Purchase tickets\n$20 general admission\nStudents free (ticket required)\nAlso streaming live \nOriol Sans\, conductor \nWith guest\nDawn Wohn\, violin \nPre-concert talk begins at 7 pm \n…… \nProgram \nThis program traces a powerful arc from explosive modern energy to timeless symphonic exhilaration. Inspired by Beethoven’s music\, Unsuk Chin’s Subito con forza bursts onto the stage with razor-sharp rhythms and volatile color. \nThe concert will continue with the lyrical warmth of Samuel Barber’s Violin Concerto\, featuring Mead Witter School of Music Assistant Professor of Violin Dawn Wohn. Its emotional candor takes the listener from rhapsodic intimacy to a finale of dazzling propulsion that will culminate in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7\, an incredible work of unstoppable momentum whose driving rhythms and ecstatic vitality have made it one of the most electrifying celebrations in the orchestral repertoire.

He studies piano with Prof. Martha Fischer. Michael has been the pianist of the Perlman Piano Trio since 2021\, being one of only two undergraduate students selected for that role in the trio’s 17-year history. \nMichael has been the recipient of numerous accolades and has performed in venues ranging from Madison’s Overture Hall to Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium. He captured first prize in the 2020 Bolz Young Artist Competition\, where he performed Liszt’s Totentanz with the Madison Symphony Orchestra in a live broadcast on Wisconsin Public Television. \nAt the age of 13\, he captured first prize in the PianoArts Wisconsin Youth Piano Competition\, culminating in six performances of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto no. 1 as a soloist with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. More recent awards include first prize in the Inaugural 2018 Steinway and Sons Competition and being selected as a winner of the 2021 UW-Madison Beethoven Competition. Michael has participated in a variety of summer music festivals\, including the Interharmony International Musical Festival in Acqui Terme (2022)\, Cooper Piano Festival at Oberlin College (2016)\, and the International Institute for Young Musicians in Lawrence\, KS (2017). He has worked in many masterclass settings with names such as Ann Schein\, Peter Takács\, William Grant Naboré\, Kenneth Broberg\, Daniel del Pino\, Jennifer Hayge\, Laura Ward\, Sarah Daneshpour\, and the Emerson String Quartet. \nOutside of music\, Michael enjoys traveling\, reading\, going to the gym\, and pondering the meaning of life while stuck in traffic. Following his two-year master’s degree\, he plans to attend medical school. \n…… \nBenjamin Davies Hudson is a senior at UW–Madison studying violin performance with David Perry. In addition to violin at UW\, he studies viola with Sally Chisholm. He is the violinist of the Perlman Piano Trio\, a fellowship ensemble at UW sponsored by Dr. Kato Perlman. \nBenjamin has won numerous competitions throughout highschool and college and has performed as a soloist with the UW Symphony Orchestra\, Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra\, and the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. \nBenjamin has attended festivals such as the Northern Lights Chamber Music Institute\, the Meadowmount School of Music\, and Yellowbarn’s Young Artists Program. \nBenjamin has worked and studied with Arnold Steinhardt\, Janet Sung\, Paul Kantor\, Seth Knopp\, Uri Vardi\, Marka Gustavsson\, Mimi Hwang\, Jordan Bakk\, Alexi Kenney\, Youngnam Kim\, Janet Chisholm\, Eugene Purdue\, The Isidore String Quartet\, and the Schumann String Quartet through masterclasses\, festivals\, and life. \n…… \nAkhil Banerjee is a freshman double majoring in Cello Performance and Computer Science (BS) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He currently studies with Prof. Parry Karp. Prior to college\, he received his formative cello instruction from Alexander Schutt. \nThis is his second year in the Perlman Piano Trio. In past summers\, Akhil has participated in the Arianna Chamber Music Festival\, the first year heavily focusing on quartet music whilst the second year shifted to a quintet engagement. He feels this helped establish a framework for musical collaboration. Other high school experiences include participation in honors orchestras\, Solo & Ensemble\, and All-State Orchestra\, all of which encouraged him to continue playing. During studies at UW-Madison\, he hopes to find further musical enrichment and summer festival opportunities. \nAkhil’s hobbies include\, but are certainly not limited to\, table tennis\, ice skating\, and watching old television programs when the burden of academia is not too heavy.
