SUMMARY:SoundWaves
DESCRIPTION:Free | No ticket required \nThis academic year\, SoundWaves is exploring scales. In this second edition\, we will be zooming out to the macro scale! \nSoundWaves combines scientific lectures about the world with live classical music performances. Each event revolves around a theme\, exploring it first from many scientific angles and then through the lens of music. The program concludes with a live performance of music related to the evening’s theme. \nThe science lectures are delivered using language that the curious layman can understand\, with a minimum of jargon and formulas. The music lectures\, while demanding careful listening\, are likewise designed for the layman and not the specialist. \nEvery SoundWaves event brings UW–Madison scientists from several departments together with Mead Witter School of Music faculty performers to explore a topic that is relevant to our world and our lives.

The radiant exploration of motion and brightness of Jennifer Higdon’s Light will turn inward with Dmitri Shostakovich’s Second Cello Concerto\, a work of haunting intensity that offers a stark\, searching meditation marked by irony and grit. Timothy Sachtleben\, 2025 Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition winner\, will be the soloist. \nIn Elysium\, Samy Moussa creates a luminous sound world suspended between stillness and awe; it is orchestral music that seems to breathe in slow\, glowing arcs\, just like the space where is was premiered\, La Sagrada Família in Barcelona. The concert will conclude with Leonard Bernstein’s electrifying Symphonic Dances from West Side Story\, where jazz\, Latin rhythms\, and symphonic sweep collide in a thrilling celebration of love\, passion\, and drama\, all with an unmistakable Broadway flair.
