DESCRIPTION:Free | No ticket required \nJoe Mahin Master’s Conducting Recital \n…… \nProgram \nMountain Thrall     Edvard Grieg \nSymphony No. 5       Franz Schubert \n…… \nJoseph Mahin is a Master of Music student at the University of Wisconsin–Madison studying Orchestral Conducting with Professor Oriol Sans. At UW–Madison\, he serves as co-conductor of the Medical Sciences Orchestra and the All-University Philharmonia Orchestra\, also periodically conducting the University Symphony Orchestra. Joe is a conducting fellow with the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra for their 25-26 season. \nBefore joining the conducting program in Madison\, he studied in Manchester\, England\, at the Royal Northern College of Music\, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree with Honors in Music Performance. While in the UK\, Joe worked with youth ensembles including the Warrington Youth Orchestra and the Macclesfield Youth Brass Band\, serving as both conductor and tutor. His experiences abroad also include leading musical projects with RNCM ensembles\, assisting conductor Lawrence Foster with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and performing with several of the UK’s leading brass bands. Outside of his musical work\, Joe is passionate about mentoring youth and serving in Christian ministry.

DESCRIPTION:Purchase tickets\n$20 general admission\nStudents free (ticket required)\nAlso streaming live \nAnita Sorenson Jazz Guest Residency \nDavid Ambrosio & Civil Disobedience\nDavid Ambrosio\, bass\nDonny McCaslin\, tenor/soprano saxophones\nJason Palmer\, trumpet\nBruce Barth\, piano\nRudy Royston\, drums \nWith the UW Blue Note Ensemble \nCivil Disobedience is a project initiated by New York bassist David Ambrosio\, showcasing the works of progressive jazz composers from the late 1960s Blue Note Era. The featured composers include Bobby Hutcherson\, Jackie McLean\, Stanley Cowell\, Harold Land\, Joe Chambers\, Duke Pearson\, and James Spaulding. Remarkably\, much of this music\, created during a period of significant social change and civil unrest\, remained unreleased for decades\, preventing these compositions from being heard when they were originally written. \nOver fifty years later\, in contemporary America\, there are notable parallels with the social movements of that era. This context lends a new and heightened sense of relevancy and urgency to the important music featured in Civil Disobedience. The project was conceptualized and convened as an artistic response to current socio-economic and social justice events\, both on a domestic and global scale. By performing the politically conscious jazz compositions of the late 1960s Blue Note Era\, Civil Disobedience seeks to bring forth the timeless messages embedded in this music and connect them with the pressing issues of today. \n…… \nProgram \n \n…… \nFor the past 30 years\, David Ambrosio has been one of New York City’s finest freelance musicians and educators. His current working projects as a leader are CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE: Blue Note Records in the Progressive ‘60s\, featuring Grammy nominated saxophonist Donny McCaslin and drumming legend Victor Lewis; and the David Ambrosio Trio\, featuring saxophonist Loren Stillman. \nIn addition to his own ensembles\, he is the co-leader of the David Ambrosio/Russ Meissner Sextet\, 40Twenty\, and Grupo Los Santos\, as well as being a part of many other groups including George Schuller’s Circle Wide\, the Matt Renzi Trio\, Eri Yamamoto Trio\, and Jazz at Lincoln Center’s BMI/New York Jazz Orchestra led by Ted Nash and Andy Farber. He has performed with such jazz greats as Kenny Werner\, Joe Lovano\, Terry Gibbs\, Buddy DeFranco\, George Garzone\, Joseph Jarmon\, and Ralph Alessi. \nDavid’s third recording as leader\, Four on the Road (Fresh Sound Records\, 2018)\, was praised as “Swinging brilliance in the light of interactive engagement\, creating music that challenges while remaining largely accessible” by Dan Bilawsky of All About Jazz. \nWith degrees in classical composition and jazz performance\, David has a broad musical palate that has become even more intensified by his extensive travel experiences. In 2001 he had the opportunity to perform in Cuba with Grupo Los Santos\, Max Pollack’s Rumbatap\, as well as numerous local Afro/Cuban folkloric music and dance ensembles. Not long after\, he began what has become a 14-year period of intense study of Afro/Cuban Bata drumming with master drummers Miguel Bernal\, Carlos Gomez\, and Carlos Aldama. \nDavid has also frequently toured in Central and South East Asia on behalf of the US State Department as a performer and clinician. Currently he is on the faculty at Hunter College and the New York Jazz Workshop in NYC.

DESCRIPTION:Free | No ticket required \nMead Witter School of Music Guest Artist Series \nChance Stine\, alto and baritone saxophones\nThomas Kasdorf\, piano \n…… \nProgram \n\n…….. \nChance Stine is a member of Pershing’s Own United States Army Ceremonial Band. Previously\, Stine earned his MM in Saxophone Performance at the University of Texas at Austin\, where he studied classical saxophone with Dr. Stephen Page and jazz with Dr. John Mills\, and a BM in Instrumental Music Education from the University of Michigan\, where he studied classical saxophone with Dr. Timothy McAllister and jazz with Dr. Andrew Bishop. He first began his education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison\, where he studied saxophone and clarinet with Dr. Wesley Warnhoff\, flute with Stephanie Jutt\, and jazz with Richard Davis. \nStine has performed with many orchestras\, bands\, and other classical ensembles across America\, such as the New World Symphony\, Academy Festival Orchestra at the Music Academy of the West\, Austin Symphony Orchestra\, Jackson Symphony Orchestra\, Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra\, University of Michigan Symphony Orchestra\, and other regional groups. In March of 2018\, Stine traveled as a featured soloist with international trumpet star\, Allen Vizzutti\, and Middleton High School on a tour to Japan. In past years\, he participated as one of the first saxophone fellows at Music Academy of the West and in the Arosa Music Festival in Switzerland. An avid proponent of new music\, Stine has also been part of premieres for several new solo and chamber works for saxophone. \nCommitted to a diverse career\, Stine is an active jazz performer who composes and performs his own original music. He frequently collaborates with both his own group based in Madison\, WI and one of Madison’s rising performers and educators\, Wilder Deitz. As a sideman\, Stine has performed with renowned artists such as the Grammy Award winning Manhattan Transfer\, Allen Vizzutti\, and the Glenn Miller Orchestra. Also a talented multi-woodwind player\, Stine has performed with an array of musical theater companies across the Midwest\, including the Grammy Award winning Terry Barber\, University of Michigan Musical Theatre Department\, Encore Musical Theatre Company\, and many other regional companies. \nA dedicated teacher\, Stine is heavily involved in music education and has been an active private saxophone and clarinet instructor for the past 9 years. He is a regular clinician for elementary\, middle\, and high school bands and holds a teaching certificate with an emphasis in music education in the state of Michigan. \nStine has won many awards and recognitions\, such as 2nd prize at the Naumburg International Saxophone Competition\, 1st place in the Vandoren Emerging Artist Competition\, national finalist in the MTNA Young Artist Competition\, 1st place in the NASA Region IV Solo Competition\, 2nd prize in the Medici International Music Competition\, 2nd prize in the UW-Manitowoc Lakeshore Wind Ensemble Young Artist Competition\, 2nd prize in the NOLA Chamber Fest\, semi-finalist in the NASA soloist and quartet competitions\, semi-finalist in the Madison Symphony Orchestra Final Forte\, and honorable mention in the UW-Madison Irving Shain Competition.

DESCRIPTION:Free | No ticket required \nMorphy Recital Hall \nAbhinay Reddy presents\nMelodies of Earth: A flutist’s rendition on climate change \nAbhinay Reddy\, flute and piccolo\nWill Preston\, piano\nRiley Smith\, guitar \n…… \nProgram \nFarewell Feathered Friends No.1 (2020)       Jacob TV (b. 1951) \nWaterways Beneath the Polar Ice Shelf (2024)       Nicole Mitchell (b. 1967) \nRising Oceans (2020)       Herman Beeftink (b. 1967) \nIntermission \n…And the Water Was Clear Again (2023)      Peter Machajdik (b. 1967) \nEarth (2021)       Takatsugu Muramatsu (b. 1978) \nAmazonia (2020)      Valerie Coleman (b. 1970) \n…… \nPerformed by Abhinay Reddy in collaboration with the UW–Madison Office of Sustainability’s Earth Fest series\, this program is inspired by the persisting events of climate change\, presenting a journey on nature’s crisis. \n“Farewell Feathered Friends No.1” utilizes a recorded soundtrack detailing 5 different birds that are either extinct or classified as endangered. “Waterways Beneath the Polar Ice Shelf” and “Rising Oceans” detail the ideas of ice caps melting\, threatening polar species and causing rising sea levels. \nFollowing the intermission\, the program will delve into “…And the Water Was Clear Again\,” where there is an underlying theme of humans polluting and overusing our waterways\, and the hope for a more sustainable future with purer water. “Earth” by Muramatsu showcases the beauty of our natural environment and what our planet could be like\, free from climate change. But at last\, “Amazonia” showcases the deforestation\, land use\, and extractivism of human nature\, culminating in a climactic finale of pure destruction. \nThis recital calls out for us as humans to take action to prevent climate change from worsening even more\, allowing us to experience the pathos of immense climate events and learn about climate change in an interdisciplinary way.
