UW Piano Outreach Program
Information
The UW Piano Outreach Program is devoted to bringing the University and community together through collaborative musical events which further the outreach mission of UW-Madison. By leveraging exciting performance opportunities for piano students with an engaged and enthusiastic audience of community members, the UW Piano Outreach program fosters a greater appreciation for art as a valuable component of life for any community. Now in its fifth year, the program has expanded to offer diverse musical programs to an ever-broadening audience. Concerts include a combination of solo piano music, art song, instrumental duos, and chamber music in a series of programs for appreciative community members, many of whom may not normally have easy access to classical music. Unlike typical performance opportunities, this design allows music students to interact with the audience; often the performers will introduce the music, or work in collaboration with students from the fields of Musicology, Ethnomusicology, Physics, and various other scholarly departments.
Some of the venues lined up for 2009-10 concerts include the Boys and Girls club of Dane County (Allied Center), Oakhill Correctional Institution, Jewish Social Services of Madison, the Madison Polish Heritage Society, the UW Space Place and numerous retirement communities and schools in the Madison area. The UW Piano Program is administered by Prof. Martha Fischer, and coordinated by Julie Page (DMA candidate, collaborative piano), and is made possible through a generous grant from the Evjue Foundation.
