The UW Horn Choir (sometimes referred to as "Hill's Angels"), has been in existence annually since 1974. The ensemble meets for a 2.5 hour rehearsal each week during the first semester in preparation for an average of two area performances. The ensemble is made up primarily of horn majors. This keeps the standard of performance quite high.
Meeting together as a group in a performance setting, while constantly rotating the part assignments, provides the students with extensive training toward advanced sectional playing. Professor Hill's constant contact conducting and directing the horn students in such a performance setting provides an additional opportunity to share detailed and practical ideas on interpretation, various styles and periods of music, sectional blending, and significant performance practices.
In past years the UW Horn Choir has performed at Midwest Music Conventions, and Regional and National Horn Workshops. During his residency on the UW campus in the fall of 2005, the choir worked extensively with Gunther Schuller as their conductor and coach, on a performance of Schuller's monumental work "Lines and Contrasts for 16 Horns."
Major repertoire for multiple horns, significant and effective transcriptions from choral music, orchestral music, as well as other chamber ensembles, and original works written exclusively for the UW Horn Choir by past and present students, colleagues, and by Professor Hill help to expand the student's musical experiences and perspectives.
The UW Horn Choir's primary purpose is to provide an effective way for all of the horn students to get together, to grow a lot through mutual music making, and to have some fun along the way!
