Scholarships and Financial Aid
Approximately half of our students receive financial support from the University, and about one third receive merit-based scholarships directly from the School of Music.
The UW-Madison School of Music offers financial support to highly gifted prospective music majors. All scholarship recipients have distinguished themselves as outstanding musicians through their musical background and by their audition. Most School of Music scholarships are awarded for a four-year period. Scholarships may total $4,000 to $16,000 during those four years.
To be elegible for scholarships
- Students must audition in person no later than the February audition date to be eligible for scholarship consideration. (The deadline to request the February audition date is February 1.)
- To apply for a School of Music scholarship, indicate (YES) where appropriate on the front of the School of Music application form. No additional application is needed.
How scholarship decisions are made
Scholarship recommendations are based on audition performance, score on the theory test taken on audition day and academic record. Most decisions on scholarships will be made after the final audition in February. Awards are made each year by April 1.
Requirements for scholarship students
- Participate in an appropriate School of Music performing organizationâpianists must enroll for accompanying;
- Maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.00;
- Maintain good progress toward a music degree and complete a minimum of 12 credits per semester.
Other Financial Aid Resources
To qualify for support outside the School of Music, it will be necessary to complete the Financial Aid Forms developed by UW-Madison, available from the Office of Student Financial Services.
